Poison Control

This morning we had our first ever incident that required a phone call to poison control. I was trying to get dressed, Josh was starting laundry and Lucas was quietly playing with a shoe box from a recent purchase of mine--which seemed harmless enough. He was sitting about five feet from me, just tearing up bits of tissue from inside the shoes--or so I thought. Little did I know he had found a bag of silica gel (why do they include that stuff in everything you purchase??) and was gleefully eating little globs of silica. The minute I caught him I freaked out and started yelling for Josh. Lucas sensed that we were both scared and he immediatley started bawling. Josh scooped him up and started rinsing his mouth out and I ran for my cell to call poison control--thankfully I had the number right on the fridge. The lady there was SOO nice and immediatley assured me that silica gel is NOT a poison--the bags say "do not ingest/eat" simply because it is a choking hazard. So since Lucas wasn't choking on it, we were in the clear. Poor tyke--Josh and I freaking out probably did more damage than the actual gel did! Needless to say, it wasn't a fun experience, but we are able to laugh about it now. Seriously, you can NOT turn your back on a two year old for even a second. Scary.

** this was our first time to ever contact poison control for Lucas--ironically I have had to do it twice before for the animals. Once when a cat ate a plant I feared might be poisonous, and another time when Trieshmann got stuck to a recently painted ledge in our house (she just wanted to bask in the sunshine of the window...little did she know the paint was still sticky, so when she woke up from her nap she was stuck to the ledge. funniest damn thing to witness her trying to pull herself off of it.) It was oil based paint and I was afraid it might be toxic if she tried to lick it off. Both times we were assured everything was fine.
