Hats off to Dr. Chance

For Josh's graduation my mother spent months planning a wonderful "Hats Off" party. Sadly, she and my father were unable to attend due to his illness (in case you didn't know--he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer). But it was really important to my mother that we continue to celebrate Josh's special day, so my aunt came in her stead, bringing much of the food and decorations. It was awesome of them both to do so much for Josh. The party was fabulous--with the "hats" theme, guests were invited to wear their favorite hat and we had some really fun ones. Mom carried the theme throughout the party, serving the huge spread of food in assorted hats or with hat decorations near by, including some pictured below:

After stuffing and drinking ourselves silly we headed outside where we officially threw our hats up in the air to celebrate for Josh. Mom also had a special letter that Scott read out loud recapping the ups and downs of his journey through medical school and residency. (Warning--the pic below taken with my "crappy" camera, so the quality is not so good..I don't have the right lens to take shots of people throwing hats into the air...something for the Christmas list no doubt!)
We really enjoyed hanging out with all our friends and family and want to say thank you again to mom and aunt Mary for this fabu party. It was a special time and it makes me sad to know my parents couldn't be there. Or Josh's mom. But I know they were with us in spirit--and Josh's mother is looking down from heaven saying "Hell yes, that's MY son, the doctor!"

A barnyard birthday bash

A few weekends ago we celebrated Alex's 2nd birthday with a barnyard theme (as seen below).

Leigh loaned me some of her old BBW galvanized tins, and I used lots of hay, raffia, bells, burlap and bandannas to decorate the tables. It gave it a very barn-esque feel. (I heart raffia--it is great for so many decorating occasions!)

Alex still isn't really into anything in particular (cars, dinos, legos, whatever). He is just now really coming out of his shell and playing appropriately with toys. But he does like barn animals, and I found some really cute party ideas online. I put Josh and Lucas to work on painting cow print on goodie bags and I myself made the cake and the banner. Cake below:

For snacks we had Moo juice (chocolate milk), Pigs in a Blanket, Mr. McGregor's Garden Patch veggies, Grains (granola), and Chicken feed (pretzel mix). Each child got a goodie bag decorated to look like a cow which held assorted barnyard themed candies (cow tails and lollipops with pigs/cows on them), stickers, stamps, and so on. They also all got a bandanna in their choice of color and a pony on a stick to take home with them. (We still have a few extra ponies that the boys think make really good swords. On another note, when I purchased the ponies I got all brown or black ponies....but Lucas insisted on picking out the PURPLE UNICORN for himself. I found that hysterical.)

Overall Alex seemed pretty thrilled with the whole party. I was worried because I planned it during his normal napping time (due to Josh's grad ceremony later that day), but he pushed through. He has been singing "happy birthday" to himself for days now. And we are yet again blessed to have such wonderful friends and family who help us celebrate our special occasions.

I have more to say about Alex being two...but I will save that for another post. He has his two year check up later this month, and I hope to have more details at that time.

The graduates...

So it's better late than never, right? But here are pics of our recent graduates. This May, Jenn finished her masters in social work and here are some pictures from her hooding ceremony/event. She is hugging Scott so tightly in the first picture because he got her a nice graduation surprise--a new car! In the next picture I have all those who attended from our family with advanced degrees--Josh with a MD, and Jenn and Mom with MSW's. Congrats!!
Next we have a few pics I snapped from Josh's grad event. Mark, Josh and Autumn below...they are all staying Little Rock, so we will be seeing lots more of them I'm sure.
And Josh being silly as he walked back to his seat. He can't take anything seriously. Being unable to drink or bear the heat (it was like a million degrees in the forum for the ceremony) I did not hang around long after the official degrees were given out. But Josh stayed for the "after hours" party and enjoyed himself one last time with his med school/residency buds. But I was able to enjoy the party my mother threw for him...more on that in the next post!

Josh's graduation

These were the official UAMS grad pics. I have some of my own to add, but thought I would go ahead and get these up. I wish I could remember the name of the guy who took them; probably should give him credit for it somewhere on here to be all correct, but alas...I can't remember my own kids names half the time lately. (They are now used to correcting me when I call them by the wrong name. Sad.)

Under Construction

Finally--I have time to devote to all the millions of things that I have been needing/wanting to do. Starting today I am on computer cleanup/maintenance duty. First up is cleaning up/backing up all my picture files and getting our second computer ready to be the Photoshop center. Then I am going to update and gussy up this blog! So for the next few days you may see some weird stuff while I figure it all out. And coming soon...pics of all the things that we have been up to lately--SOOO much fun stuff to show!

All good things come to an end....

I don't know if I would call four years of limited salary, high stress, and loooong hours of anesthesiology residency a "good thing" but alas...it has come to an end. Joshua officially finished today!! Now he has several weeks off before his "real" job begins and we have lots of family fun things planned. It has been a rough couple weeks--I am way behind in posting--I have pictures from Josh's graduation ceremony and party, Alex's birthday, and other activities that I need to get up. I am moving a little slower these days, though...can't imagine why?! And to complicate matters my computer finally hit capacity. Thankfully Scott gave Josh a new computer for graduation (using it now...love it!) and he is soon going to wipe our old computer and turn it into my Photoshop only computer--which will ROCK!!

Congrats Josh!!

Memorial day on the lake

This Memorial Day I actually FELT like we had a holiday. Maybe it is because I have spent so many years slaving/working on holidays during my retail career--even a holiday day off never really feels like a holiday. But this year I am so close to the finish line that I FELT like it was a holiday. It didn't hurt that the stars and moon aligned and Josh actually had the day off too (he still had to work that NIGHT, but hey--we had a good 12 hours together!) This almost never happens except on the religious holidays--and not always even those. So it was a rare treat to all be off together. It was made nicer by the pleasant weather and the fact that Scott and Jenn had a boat at Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs. I miss camping/boating--it was always something we enjoyed as kids, and I'm glad we are finally able to find the time to devote to it again. And Lake Ouachita is beautiful and serene--we barely saw many other boaters and were really able to relax and enjoy the day. Some of us more than others....here is Alex all tuckered out after a few hours in the sun...glad he was able to catch a nap and recharge for round two after lunch! Lucas was very apprehensive about going to the lake. He worried about it and had a million questions the night before; mainly, would there be any sharks or whales? This does not bode well for our beach trip in a few weeks, but for now he seemed to understand that no fierce creatures live in the lake....that I know of anyway! Once we got on the boat he was nervous about jumping in the water and needed his typical warm-up period. But five hours later we had to threaten to pull him out, so he found his groove. He particularly liked Uncle Scott throwing him in and then doing the Scott whale jump (and pretty much anything else that involved big splashes).
Alex enjoyed the water too and I fear by next summer we will have two total fishes on our hands. I tried to swim, but found it difficult to lug my big belly on and off the boat...so mostly I just enjoyed the atmosphere and scenery and ate lots of lake food. (Ever notice how sandwiches, Doritos, and canned drinks are ten thousand times better at the lake? Or is that just me?) Here was the pretty view of the lake:
And here is Lucas driving with daddy. He cracked us all up with his dance moves on the bow of the boat. That kid is as spunky and sassy as they come!
And Scott and Jenn. We all got a good chuckle because Jenn was just as concerned about the water as Lucas...Maybe we will help turn her into a fish soon too!
